I came to the Southend area when I was a little under five years old, dad was to get a posting to Horseshoe Barracks at Shoeburyness, him being
in the Royal Artillery and posted from Woolwich. Our first 'house' was in St Vincents Road in Westcliff, we then moved to Ailsa Road, both were army hirings. Dad came out of the army so we were technically evicted, but got a council house in Denton Avenue, by Prince Avenue School. I went to St Helens School, then onto St Thomas More's up Keniworth Drive. Leaving school I first worked at Snuggie Shoes on the Grainger Road Industrial Estate, when they went bust I had several jobs here and there and ended up at Marshall's Brushes by Kent Elms, left there to join the army. Used to go to the Southend Youth Club and SUFC regularly. I was known as 'Slim' because I wasn't! :)

Having lived all my life in the Southend area there are many odd little memories that pop up from time to time, Like when aged 4 or 5 ( 1962 63) I lived in Fairmead Avenue, I can remember about only 3 or 4 cars being parked in the road and when the Howards diary horse drawn milk float came up the
road if the old milkman took to long nattering the horse used to wander off up the road to the next call, managing to go round the odd car without hitting it.
